Speedometer and odometer not working

Yesterday I replaced my speedometer cable, finished it up and took my truck for a quick spin and everything worked fine. Then I went to work and on my way home my speedometer and odometer quit working. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I'd check and make sure the cable didn't pop out somewhere first

My bet would be it came out behind the speedometer. This is a snap in connection and you must be sure it did so. Otherwise check by the tranny to see if you forgot to put the retaining bolt back in and the tranny popped that connection out.

Stick your finger in the hole on the transmission where the speedometer gear goes and see if the gear inside the transmission is worn out. These are plastic and can wear out pretty easily. Just don't get your finger stuck in there lol

These are plastic (maybe yes, maybe no) and can wear out pretty easily.
Speedometer DRIVE gear: On the output shaft of the trans. If this is a 2WD C6, it's not replaceable by itself, as it's made as part of the output shaft.

Speedometer nylon DRIVEN gear: Located at the end of the cable, nylon teeth can strip / Available from Ford (16 thru 21 tooth gears available) & auto parts stores.

That's how it is in mine, 4-speed manual. When I changed mine, there were no teeth on it whatsoever.

Hello. Just wanted to say on my 80 custom with man 3od. Hope you kept the original nylon gear because it has numbers on it specific to your application. And when you order a new one your gona need to know what side of the tranny your speedo cable goes into. I searched everywhere for a new one and cant get them anywhere except cj pony parts on the interweb. Hope this helps.

I think you are mistaken. First, all of the transmissions I've seen for these trucks have the speedo gear going in on the driver's side. And that includes the transfer cases.

As for sources, these gears are available practically everywhere. A friend of mine picked one up at our local O'Reilly's - in stock - and we live in a small town in Oklahoma. But, here are a few other sources for c0dz 17271-A from this search:
