I'm having problems with my 1968 f100 speedometer. When the truck is sitting still running or off, the dial chooses random spots to sit on the speedometer. Right now it's at 50 mph. When I drive it, the dial goes all the way up to 100 mph and it makes this loud scraping, spinning noise. Do you have any idea what the problem might be? Anything helps.
Corey
First get underneath your rig and visually examine the speedo cable. Check if it is kinked.
Second, pull the speedo cable from the transmission and attached it to a drill driver. Have someone engage the drill driver whil you observe the speedo. Also take a look at the gear at the end of the cable. Replace the gear if it is missing any teeth. Still jumpy?
Get up underneath the dash and re-seat the speedo cable. It might not be engaged all the way and binding at the connector. Retest using the drill driver. Still jumpy?
Remove the instrument cluster and spin the speedometer by hand or if ya can, use the drill driver. If it works OK, then replace the speedometer cable. If it si bad, the speedometer gauge itself is bad.

OH, welcome to FTE.
Thanks HIO Silver for your ideas for repairing my speedometer. Check out the videos i previously posted and you'll see what i'm talking about. When I removed the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer i could turn the speedometer by hand and it would stay where I stopped turning it and let go. When i would turn it backwards it would drop back down to where ever i stopped it. Do you think this could be cured with WD-40 or another lube or is my speedometer broken?
Sorry for the late reply but my PC got zapped by a power outage. $50 later with a new power supply and I am back online.
Thanks for the videos. That tells me ALOT. Btw, great commentary ! Ya had me laughing like a school girl.
Arrightee... back to the problem at hand. Unfortunately, your speedometer is toast. If turned by hand, the needle should return to rest. I'm not sure if it can be lubed back to life but ya might as well try since it is not working correctly. No harm, no foul.
Or head to your local wrecking yard for a replacement and swap the speedo assembly over.
thank you very much. I greased the speedometer and it quieted it, but it didn't work. I'm probably going to get a whole new speedometer gauge or hopefully (if it's in my budget) a new gauge set up. but again, thank you for the help.
After you find and install a good replacement, be sure to take apart the broken one. A clever little device, the speedometer. A spinning magnet, a surrounding hub and low tension spring. I'll bet either the spring has broken, or a worn bushing causing contact between hub and magnet. Post photos of the cause if you can!
