I have a 91 F150 4x4 and my speedometer and odometer don't work. The truck is a 5-speed and every once in a while when I shift the speedometer works for a second or two. I unhooked the speedometer from the transmission and turned the cable and I saw the speedometer needle moving. I am not sure what else to check.
didn't know Fords still had mechanicl speedos in the 90s, learn something everyday.
I would guess the gear inside the tranny that drives the speedo cable is stripped or maybe the gear on the cable is marginal. Might also be the cable itself is broken and when you are at speed the cable slips enough not to make the needle move. Does the speedo move when you are going really slow and then does it stop when you speed upa little?
The only time I have noticed the speedometer work is occasionally when I shift gears it will work for a few seconds. When I unhooked the speedometer from the transmision the teeth looked pretty good.
I had a similar problem on my 1989 F-150 with the 4 speed manual transmission. The plastic speedo gear was pressed or molded on a knurled sleeve (like a ratchet handle). The gear slipped off of the sleeve when the transmission oil got hot. No luck on just pressing it back in place. Needed to be replaced.
I'm not sure if this is the type of speedo gear in your truck, but you may want to see if the gear inside of the transmission is able to be turned while the truck is parked.
