the gauge's in my dash on occasion will max themselves fully out, like the gas points to full, temp to h and etc could this be a possible ground problem?
I think it would be a ground problem - check/clean/snug up all grounds - engine to cab, battery to engine, gauges' ground to cab, etc. While you're at it, check your rear taillight/turn signal grounds, too.
Sounds to me more than likely the ICVR (instrument cluster voltage regulator) is having issues. The instrument cluster operates on 5.5 volts and the regulator is attached to the back of the instrument cluster. It's a small box that is held on to the cluster by one screw and has what looks like a 9V battery connector that connects it to the cluster.
Good call, Mike - fergot about that one. You're probably right, again, as usual. And while you have the dash gauges apart, it wouldn't hurt to clean the pins with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

Thanks FB, these instruments work by grounding through the sending units. If the needles move, that means they are grounded well enough, so my first guess would be the ICVR.
You're welcome, Mike. Old age has me at a disadvantage....along with the "itis" family - Tendon-itis, bursitis, Arhtur-itis, etc, and memory is getting poor. We should remind the op if he's checking the ICVR with a multimeter, it won't show well - it has a square wave function..
Any parts store will probably have them and all the usual suspects. Everything from 57 to probably 79 had them, and beyond. "Ford ICVR" search will keep you busy.
Just make sure the original is actually bad first. It's a mechanical voltage regulator, a bi-metallic spring heats up and breaks contact. On/Off. Knocks 12+ volts down to about half that by clicking On/Off. They aren't super expensive but they are often replaced unnecessarily, that sort of stings since that's a lot of beer.

Yup, right there with you. And X2 on the square wave.....Uh, what were we talking about?
Also, NPD has them in their Florida warehouse. https://www.npdlink.com/store/produc...305-60491.html
Also, the part number is D1AZ-10804-A, Motorcraft P/N GR-513
Dennis Carpenter, Concord, NC has 2,623 (!) (704) 786-8139
Green Sales, Cincinnati, OH has 10 (800) 543-4959
There are also quite a few others floating around at various Ford dealers and obsolete parts suppliers. If you want more names, let me know.
