The EPC circuit is not applicable to your truck, since you don't have an electronically controlled transmission. I believe in this case, the code means have a complete sensor failure - perhaps the ECT?

No, the only thing matters is the catch code (8TF) int his case, and even then, that doesn't particularly matter either in a stock application.

So what would cause code 98 for I'm guessing an automatic tranny

No, your truck doesn't have an electronically controlled transmission. The computer doesn't know it's even there.

The code 98 in your case just means the computer is in limp mode because of a bad sensor.

And also code 51 is coolant temp sensor circuit open I believe and I have found the one on the thermostat but I'm guessing there is two cause the one on the thermostat doesn't affect the gauge

There are two. One for the gauge, one for the computer. The computer's sensor uses a two-wire connection, the one for the gauge is a single wire.
