speedometer bounce?

The speedometer cable broke and I replaced it. Now the needle bounces from 20 MPH to 70 or 80 up until I get the speed to around 50. Makes a racket while doing this also. Any ideas of why this happen and is there anything I can do besides pulling it and taking to a shop to be repaired? It is the original speedo. Thanks for any advice.

New cable. Make sure it is not too long and not too short........but just right. Is the cable housing smooth? Most likely the cable. At least the cable is the only thing I've ever seen cause wide swings in the speedometer. Make sure it is lubricated. Graphite is the preferred lubricant.

Thanks Ray. I did use white grease on the complete cable as I put it on the cable housing. It was a universal cable so maybe it is too long. Do you think a quarter of an inch too long be able to cause this?

Too long and the cable can "bunch up" within the housing. Bunch up is the best term I can think of now and I am on my way out the door. Too short and the end can run in and out of engagement. Lubrication on the main drive into the speedometer may use a drop of oil as well. Sorry to be short but I am on my way out the door.

Where did the old cable break? How hard was it to install the new cable into the speedometer? I would guess something is dragging on the speedometer end somehow. Maybe check that end that it is flowing in smoothly?

It broke down near the trans gear. The noise is up near/at the Speedo. Using a universal cable but had to guess at length and may have made it a little bit long. I will try to shorten it but may have to get another one as you only get one chance to put he cut end on it.

Dave if the cable is too long for the sleeve you could loosen it a little at the cluster and see if that helps. Just a short test drive should do.
