I have the connection made at the transmission and it turns the (inside) cable. According to this the speedometer gear at the transmission is connected properly. My problem is getting the cable to seat into the back of the speedometer.
I have the old cable out. I can seat the old cable into the speedometer. The new one does not go in far enough. I'm thinking the square end of the cable is not lined up to the back of the speedometer.
So, my question........is there a trick to seating the cable to the speedometer? For example do I need to jack up the rear and spin the rear tires until I can get the square end of the cable to seat.
I did a thread search before I wrote this by the way.
Look forward to your comments.

It is a lot easier if you make the connection at the speedometer first. That way you can pull the cable into the cab and have a little more room to work. They have to be pointed pretty much straight at each other or it will bind up.
Well, I was afraid you might say just what you said. I guess I will have to take the connection back out of the transmission. The only issue here is that the new cable connection to the transmission has an O-ring that the old connection did not have so it will be harder to pull it back out.
My thinking was that it would be easier to mesh the gear on the end of the cable if it had the freedom to rotate. Guessed wrong i suppose. I will try it the way you suggest.
thanks for your prompt reply.

If trans is in neutral may be able to rotate cable at the speedometer slightly to align. If no success suggest removing and comparing both original and replacement cable and housing for differences. Also check the gear retaining clip, at the trans, is set and seated properly.
Also apply lubricant to the cable before inserting into the housing. I purchased the speedometer cable grease, came in a tube, thru popular online Ford part supplier a few months ago and recently the speedometer needle started acting up with an occasional noise coming from the cable. Few days ago removed and lubricated the cable using Lithium grease and so far seems to have solved the problem?

Putting it back in the transmission is a piece of cake because the speedo will turn easily. And the way those gears are cut they usually just go right in the trans.
