What mileage should I do a first oil change on a 2016 F150 5Litre? I normally do it every 3 months or 5000 miles...should the initial one be any sooner?

I did my first oil change at 3000. Plan to do every 5k after that.

Changed mine the first time at 3,500 miles. At 7,500 miles I'll go to full synthetic and change it every 7,500 miles thereafter.

My first service is tomorrow at 5,800 miles. And I'll go full synthetic.

Every 5K is excessive unless you're subjecting the truck to extreme duty. I have recent experience with an 09 and 10 F150 5.4s... both ran Mobil 1 at 7.5K interval... the 09 was sold with 180K on the clock to a friend who is still running it, and the 10 was traded in with 225K on it. Both see long idle times, etc.

I did the first change at 1K, second change at 5K, and will use the OLM thereafter.

Technically speaking, Ford does not recommend an early change during the break-in period. Unless your driving qualifies for the harsh environment service cycle in the owner's manual, Ford just recommends waiting for the oil change light to turn on.

I switched to full synthetic at 2,500 miles and plan to run the oil until the oil life meter says I'm down to 20%. I've done quite a few used oil analysis tests on previous rigs and Ford's meter tracks perfectly with the oil analysis. At least for my driving environment. This is my balance between saving money/resources and controlling my urge to change it before it starts to break down.

One could argue even my oil change plans are too aggressive. It's your truck, so go with what feels good. But IMO you could cut back on the frequency and still not hurt your engine.

Many people still change their oil as they did in 1975. Technology (machining, oil improvements, engine management etc) have come a loooong way since "every 3000 miles" was handed to us by the drive through oil change business. On my 2012 5.0 I dropped the factory fill at 5000 miles and used Mobil1 full synthetic for the change. Mobil1 is still my oil of choice. I've followed the mfg's recommended OCI since then. 10,000 miles. Next week is the 85,000 mile change.

Had mine in for its first service yesterday @ 5,800 miles. A whole $64 for full-synthetic Motorcraft oil and filter - and they washed it. Since we had the adaptive cruise control recall done as well it took most of the day, but they gave us a brand new Edge as a loaner, so we spent the day running errands and shopping in the big city. Very pleasant experience.

Did my first oil change at 1500 miles, examined the oil and filter and found it to be
really clean,no metal either.. Much to my surprise !

Prob could have left it in there but being the curious fool I wasted 8 quarts and a filter.

My 67 f-100 calls for oil changes at 6,000 miles. My 2015 f-150 calls for 10,000. I think engine and oil technology has advanced greatly in 49 years. Ford is going to recommend on the low side if anything so as to ensure a good reputation for their product.

Just wait for the truck to tell you that's why all the technology is there. Make zero sense to change before it's needed

All manufacturers will say you can use whatever oil you like to as long as it meets the weight and api specs. You MAY NOT however extend the drain intervals, regardless what Mobile 1, Amsoil etc etc claim.
