Oil Change Intervals

For those of you who have had your trucks for a few months now, have you done an oil change and at what interval are you doing it at?

I just hit 5000 miles and on the fence of when to do it.

I've always done my 6.7's at 5,000 miles. My 2017 is going to hit that mileage in another couple of weeks and I plan on doing it then.

You *can* go as long as until the computer tells you to do it, but I like 5k.

I like to change at 5k miles so it is easy to remember when the next change is due.

Do you reset the oil life system when you change at 5K or do you wait until it says its due and just reset it then knowing that you are changing on your own schedule?

Trying to figure out if resetting at the 5K oil change would have any pros/cons over just waiting to reset when the oil life monitor gives you the alert. Thoughts?

I reset it to 100% after every time I do the oil change. I never go off the truck cause they are setup to tell you that you need an oil change every 10k or 15k miles. I just go off my odometer and every 5k do the oil and every 10k do oil, fuel, air.

I haven't received my truck yet and the owner's manual if very vague when it comes to the oil life monitor system.

Can you view the percentage of oil life left at any time or does it only give you the change oil message when it calculates that it's at 10%? Thanks!

I haven't received my new truck either so I don't know how the 2017 super duty reads, but my 2016 f550 I drive doesn't say a percentage it just says change oil soon or oil change is required.

It only tells you when it is due unfortunately.

Thanks. This is what I found in the manual. Change Soon=10% life or less. Change required=0% life.

I just changed mine at 1300 miles and will do it every 5 k.

b.t.w. This is my first big diesel. I bought a $7 - 18qt drain pan at Walmart. Let me tell you invest in a very big drain pan. I have never seen so much oil in my life. It looked like one of those oil field drills hitting it big!! I only got one cup on garage floor....

I'll change at 5,000 and I think I'm going to do it at each 5,000 going forward. The 6.7L has an "Intelligent Oil Minder" but I'm not sure what's really smart. It must factor in percentage of time with high temps or pressures and such. On my 2011 the truck would tell me to change at about 7,500 miles each time. I went by that schedule on the 2011 but on this truck I will feel better if I don't let the oil go that long.

If you have a Firehouse Subs near by they sell their 5 gallon pickle buckets with lids for $2 donation to their charity. I have several of them around the garage that I use for everything from cleaning buckets to oil buckets.

I'm going by the intelligent oil life monitor and motor craft oils .. I haven't seen a bad oil analysis on motorcraft yet .. the 6.7's seem to be much easier on oils than the 6.0 and 6.4 .. I'm at 8100 miles and still haven't seen the change oil soon screen .. I'll do fuel filters every other oil change

From what I can see in the manual The description of intervals and duty cycle is dependent on miles, idling hours, and working, hauling. So I am surmising that the oil monitor is estimating warning lights based on these items. It says, 5000 miles for SEVERE Conditions and outlines those conditions such as off road, hi idling hours, towing for a significant amount of time. These are fairly extreme conditions. It will be interesting to see what you folks get for notice to change oil, service now, based on your mileage and your use. I also saw with the manual that oil changes are twice per year at a minimum, provided normal work duty. So I think I will be at twice yearly oil, 5000 miles or 8000 Km, and once yearly fuel filters. Or more. The wild card for me is summer towing mileage. I have done trips of 5000 Km over 4 weeks. So, I would sure like to hear from folks on here their experience with the warning service soon, and service now warnings and how many Km, idling hours, towing, off roaring ect. For sure these motors will not be as delicate with the oil change inter pal as the former motors, in particular the HEUI fired 6.0 injectors. Ford changed the normal to severe duty to 7500 Km oil change interval on the 6.0 several shears back and I had been following 3500 mile, 5000 Km before that and then moved to 5000 mile, 7500 km. I am already at 2600 Km, and I am only 3 weeks in on the 2017.
