Any preferences or opinions on power steering fluid?

Just wondering if any of you guys have any preferences or opinions on what power steering fluid works well with this generation of F series trucks. What is your preference and why?

If I remember correctly, they take type F transmission fluid. But regular PS fluid works too.

I've been told, if it is new you have a choice, type F or ps fluid, if used stay with what's been used. Tranny fluid will be red.

Does anyone use a (inline) filter for the PS system?

Ultraranger, that is a Magnefine PS filter which is also sold by NAPA and IIRC, your local Ford dealer.

I just wondered if they were used by any members and if they liked them or not.I don't know if they are really needed or not. I mean if they were needed I would think some of the car makers would have them on their cars/trucks. I don't think semi's have them either.

I added PS to my truck but I didn't put an inline filter on it. However, common sense would seem to suggest that filtration of the fluid could not do anything but help and make the pump and other PS components last a longer life, if you did have a filter on the system.

Perhaps Ford didn't install them because it would have been an added expense on their bottom line to have done so. It might also be that by them not installing them that the system would wear out faster and they could sell more PS service parts for their vehicles.

It's just up to you whether you put one on or not.

I think I might install a remote spin on filter system later this year. The CFO has given me strict orders not to buy anything until after we get back from Baja in May. But before those orders were given I got a brake prop. valve tool.-LOL

The $10.00 bucks plus shipping for the tool shouldn't have caused any major problems with the accountant.

Fortunately, wife v2.0 doesn't tell me what I can and can't do when it comes to buying parts or tools. Wife v1.0 was a completely different story.

I use universal tractor hydraulic fluid for ps systems. Also filters are a good thing.
