Im getting low on power steering fluid since I can hear it whining so I want to top it off but from what I have read you should put transmission fluid in the pump not power steering fluid in?? This seems a bit odd to me

It's Mercon. It's not really just transmission fluid, rather that it is a hydraulic fluid that Ford specs for use in Auto trannies and power steering units of some of their vehicles. Using power steering fluid will make things worse.
Yea so auto tranny fluid should be used over power steering fluid? Is this on all vehicales or just our Fords? And if I have power steering fluid in my pump how can i flush that to put the right stuff in?
I use F in mine, dexron while yes quieter then PS fluid, it produces light squeal/whine almost all the time.
Type F it's silent, unless of course get abusive on it say holding at full lock for too long a time.
PS fluid makes it sound like someone is slow torturing a pig, never stops squealing.
mine has been spun to 7500 with muddy water in it, tractor hydraulic oil, engine oil, power steering fluid, atf pretty much anything you can think of, one of my lines has a leak so I am constantly filling it with what ever I have on hand, been doing this since 2006 and havn't had any problems with the pump, I would just put what ever you have sitting around in it they are pretty indestructable.
just read the post above mine and i cannot speak for how loud the pump is as my engine too loud
Lordy, how soon we forget. EVERYONE used ATF in their power steering. Older Fords and GM say to use ATF right on the cap. So-called "power steering fluid" is ATF without the red dye designed only to seperate you from your money. Use any old ATF you want, it won't make any difference. I have been using ATF in every car or truck I have ever owned since the 70s and have never had a pump failure. ATF is in my 2005 Escape and 2005 Freestyle right now (newest cars in my fleet). "Power Steering Fluid" is for suckers.
