Hi Guys,
Been a long time since I was on here. My truck is a late 77 F250. About 11 years ago the project started. The truck moved to a few body shops that screwed me and parts were lost along the way. The story is much longer but I will leave it at that. I got the truck moving toward completion about 1 year ago. My last hurdle it looks like is headlight buckets.
This truck was made by Johnny Cash before I bought it. The grill is a 78. The headlight buckets and corner brackets are lost so there is a guy about an hour away from me that parts out trucks. I called him for a set of round headlight buckets, he only sell them with the core support, I needed them so I paid $125 for a good core support to pull the buckets and mounts from. These are not fitting well in my truck. Did the core support change in 77? Does anyone know if the mounts changed between 73-79? If so what do I need to look for? Only aftermarket buckets I can find are for rectangle headlights.
I'm not sure about what changed but in 78 round headlights in a square hole were available for 78customs. This was a new design for grills in 78 as 77 had a different grill with different inserts for their round headlights in a square hole. I don't think they would be interchangeable but I wouldn't swear by that either.
If your truck is a 77, and the core support is a 77, the round buckets should go right on. If it is a 78/79 core support and has or had rectangle headlights then you will have to redrill the mount holes to get the 73-77 round buckets to fit.
I believe the indention are there? Repo round buckets are available. Good looking truck, that is for sure.
I bought an original ford core support with round headlight components from a parted out truck. It must have been a 73-77 truck as they are low mount headlights. I have seen the LMC parts but round are shown as 73-77 and rectangle for 78-79. I don't see a mount bracket for a 78. high mount round. I already have complete 78/79 grill with round bezels. When I bought the truck it had a 78/79 shell and round headlights. I'm so over budget on this I'm trying to use what I got.
Below is a youtube video I found of a guy going from 78 to a 75 grill. I might try to get ahold of him. He changed the headlight mount. Maybe the 73-77 buckets fit the 78/79 mount bracket?
My truck is 45 minutes away at a buddies house. He tried putting it together last night and said it wasn't going to work. I need to get my own eyes on it.
Any advise is appeciated. 11 years and it is sooooo close to being back in action.
Some people don't know the correct nomenclature for headlamp parts.
Take a look-see at this pic: The basic part numbers for the: headlamp housing: 13008 .. the bucket (right side): 13118 .. the headlamp retaining ring: 13015 .. the headlamp bezel (aka door): 13064
1973/77: Ford did not sell the buckets by themselves, they were only available with the headlamp assy.

So yes square as they are commonly called square, but in all actuality they are rectangle shaped. Those headlights did start on the 78 model trucks. The base and Custom package trucks came with the round headlights in 78 and the Rangers, Ranger xlt, and Lariat trucks came with the rectangle headlights.
