I've owned my 89 f250 with the 7.3 in it for 3 years now and in that time I've had to change the injection pump in it twice already and it's on it's way out again. Been buying new rebuilt pumps and they haven't even been lasting a year. The issue I'm having right now with it is it will fire up decent when cold but will barely fire when it's hot. If I shut it off for 5 mins or even just to order my coffee it has trouble starting. I've changed the lift pump on the engine and put new fuel lines and tank on. Would like to find the cause of the pump failures...
Where are you buying them from? Cheap crummy rebuilds is one thing we see a lot around here.
There are only about three places that are recommended around here for pumps, one of which is R&D IDI Performance - R&D IDI Performance - Home
One test you can do is get the engine warmed up, let it sit for 5-10 minutes for it to "heat soak", then pour cool water over the back of the IP(where the injector lines come from). If it fires right up, it's head-rotor clearance that is the problem; typical of this sort of failure.
The real problem is that the replacement cost of the head and rotor set is somewhere around $400 in parts alone, so cheap rebuilders aren't going to replace it, even if it is needed.
A bad starter can cause issues as well, but the failure mode is usually hard/no starting when cold. Once it's warmed up, the batteries are better charged and everything is easier to move.
Leroy the myth that ULSD is not lubed is just that a myth.. all diesel has a lube added and will not wear out the IP...ALL.. the problem is prolly a bad IP or AIR in the system.. or glow plug controller..
