Well you guys were right! I replaced the amp and it works WAY better. Having the audible sound makes it a cinch to orient as well!

Now I just have to get the antenna orientation pointer re aligned with actual.

That pointer isn't aligned with any particular direction the antenna is pointing. That is to say, aligning the pointer with the stationary pointer simply orients the antenna so that it will lay flat on the roof and not hit anything.
So when you do align the two arrows, make sure your antenna is in the stowed position.
