You are correct. I am not sure about the 80 to 89 question. A 1987 to 1992 f150 are the brick nose bodystyle.
The Explorer bucket seats from what I have seen look to be the same seat bottoms as the lightning seats.
The seat back hinges from the Explorer seats were also the same as the seat back hinges on the 1990 f150. One of my hinges were bad and they were a direct swap.
I'm going to see if I can get NumberDummy to tell us when the base/tracks changed from the Bronco/Supercab style to something else. That should help us.
Got an answer from NumberDummy: "1980/89 is one type, 1990/96 is another." So, it seems to me that since Brad bolted '92 seats & tracks to a seat pan, the 90-96 tracks and seats are the ones to look for.
If y'all agree with my understanding, I'll update the web page.
Gary..I don't know if this will shed any light on the "Great Bucket Seat..V..Captain's Chair Debate", but my tracks measure ..13 1/2" outside to outside...and 17 inches front to back...j..
My seats had previously been mounted in a crew cab when I got them. They are on slightly modified Bronco mounting(track on drivers, pass flips forward with no adjustment) so the seat sits flat and the floor is drilled to suit. I believe they used 1 existing hole per side, it's been almost 11 years since I put them in though.
