Recently purchased a 2004 F-250 with 185,000 miles. Truck appears to be extremely well cared for. Had an long crank BUT always start condition. Shop said that it as an ICP issue. While we were in there we replaced the IPR. Upon removing the IPR, the mech said he thought that there were 1 or 2 metal specs on the screen. I looked at it and could not make out anything that looks metal. We took the screen of and sprayed Brakekleen in it and nothing came out. Seem to think I need a LPOP and or should replace my HPOP. This is the first work that he has done for me. Again, if there was something on the screen it was too small for me to see and I was there when he removed it. Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks.
If your mechanic "thought he saw" one or two metal specs, and upon this assumption of what he "seems to have seen" I would kindly pay the man for services rendered and run as fast as you can to a reputable shop that actually knows, I mean KNOWS, a 6.0.
Does it start better after the ICP?
It's possible it may have a HPO leak somewhere, but if she lights up better than before, the odds are you will be fine. There is no need to spend hundred or thousands of your money to satisfy the assumption of a mechanic.
The truck has always started. Just seemed to take 2 seconds at times or 5 seconds at times. Happened when warm or cold, and only occasionally. The screen did have 2 or 3 specs on it but they looked like oil to me, and they were tiny. I also recently changed to Rotella T6 and Archoil and he said to change it again. That is a waste of time and money to me. How will that help me. If there is a problem all that will do is contaminate the new oil. Maybe time to go somewhere else.
If you have less than 5000 miles on that service, then yes it's a waste of money unless the oil was really nasty when you purchased it.....otherwise run to 5000 miles and don't sweat it. Change both fuel filters every 10k.
5 sec start is actually considered normal by Ford, but the ICP is prone to failure, yes. If nothing else it was a good PM measure and if yours is under the turbo like mine is, a little more time to get at it.
Get something straight away to monitor data LIVE.
I truly appreciate your responses. I have an Edge reader. Oil temps are within 5 degrees of the coolant always. Both run around 185 degrees. I am going to purchase a scanner to monitor what I can't now. Also put in 2 new batteries in it so I don't damage the FICM or the injectors. The batteries were 5 years old but seemed to work fine, but showed a little low voltage occasionally, so didn't want to take a chance.
2-5 seconds is a pretty normal start. park the truck nose down, let it set overnight and see what happens. If it starts fast, could be a leaky seal on the HPOP.
Thanks guys. I knew of the possible issues when buying this truck, being a 6.0. It was so clean that I couldn't pass on it. I was and still am prepared to spend some money on it. Just don't want to spend it needlessly. I will watch all temps and monitor cranking times. Any suggestions on a monitor. (SCT, Edge, Bully Dog etc.) Truck does not a have tune on it that I know of. Has stock head bolts, an EGR delete but otherwise stock I believe.
Coupon code TRT30 for on-line purchase at Advance will save you $50 off the $159 price... for a scan gauge II. Has to be programmed by you to work and can display 4 things at one. Programmed units can be had by sponsors here and run a little more. Ed@FICMRepair.com sells them, some other sponsor do as well.
Torque Pro for Android, $5 software, $20 EML327 OBD blue tooth devise. It will read live data and clear codes, can display more than 4 at a time and at $30, great deal for occasional use. It does require initialization each time you use it.
Once again, thanks for the info. My next call will be to FICMRepair. I do not have a smart phone of any type so can't go there. Appreciate all the effort guys.
