I use the two bolts that came on the truck. Forget the third bolt.
Two bolts held the original starter. Two bolts will hold the replacement starter.
You can try my last suggestion with the starter you have now.

35154 is listed on the Oreilly web site for a 2001 F350 7.3
I went with it because it is new, not rebuilt and the core charge is only $10.
I paid the core charge and kept my original starter. My original has since been rebuilt and is ready to go back on the truck when the 35154 fails and is ready to be exchanged or rebuilt.

I agree that the "Denso" I posted above is a knock-off, but after comparing the images between the 35154 and the knock-off Denso, I would still go with the knock-off. It looks much more built/robust. Of course, if you wanted to do it right, get the real Denso and be done with it.

Alternatively you could go with the DB Electrical version, but you are still looking at knock-off starters at that point. At least it has the post on the side which may eliminate your need for modifying the lug.

True. If you look carefully, EBay has an OEM Mitsubishi starter for $200, and a Bosch unit for $220. I believe the 7.3 came with either the Nippondenso or the Mitsubishi model, but I could be wrong. I would trust the Bosch unit to be good quality as they have a good reputation for electrical parts. IMO the rest are junk, and won't last very long, based on the stories I hear from 7.3 owners.
