So I'm running 16.5 slotted mags and need new tires. I read that 16.5s don't air down well for stuff like beachin and other such off road adventures and tire selection is getting pretty limited for them. I was gonna purchase 16s but I talked to the tire "pros" and they said 16s are going out too they recomended 17,18,19,20s or bigger. Has anyone heard 16s are now old school. What size should I go with. Personally anything 19 and up I think start to look funny on older trucks. Sorry so long winded.
I've also heard everywhere but this board that all 16.5" rims don't have the safety bead that other sizes have so they are more likely to lose a bead, especially at low air pressure. Someone on here swore that wasn't true. I don't know personally, I've never owned anything with 16.5" rims.
Personally I don't like the look of 17" rims on anything less than about a 35" tire. And most of the 17" (and bigger) rims that I've seen have had a more "modern" look that I've never appreciated on this vintage truck. But that's just my opinion.
As far as 16", there probably aren't a huge variety of sizes, and the choices won't be going up. But it's still pretty common, so I think sizes close to stock will be around for a long time.

Yes I agree the styles aren't very appealing, a lot black used now. I was thinking of maybe the Mickey Thompson classic 3s or something similar. Wish I could just stay with the mags, they look awesome but don't want to get stranded on the beach with a tire off the bead.
I would have to ask what size are the wheels & tires?
How far "air down" are you going to go? From street psi (?) to beach psi (?)?
Also how hard / fast will you be making turns?
Only beach I have been on IIRC had a max speed limit of like 10 mph so if going 10 mph and did a hard turn I don't think you would push an aired down tire off it's bead.
Now another way to fix that would be to run tubes in all the wheels. I did this when racing off road and never had issues but the truck was also never driven on the road - race only truck.

I do believe the speed limit is 10 but I will be hauling a truck camper sometimes. If I'm not carrying the camper I'll drive back to house to air up, it's about a mile. The rims are 16.5x12 slotted mags, don't kno the brand but they're old, they were my dads when he was a kid. The only sizes are 33x12.5 unless I want a super noisy mudder. One tire shop said they don't do 16.5s. My local guy said its not a problem just limited sizes compared to the 17-20s
A 12.5 tire on a 12" rim is pushing it even on the street if not careful on psi in my book.
I think I would go with tubes and not worry......other than sand getting in if aired down too low.
Also I would look into a way to air up when you get off the sand. Yes it may be a mile but a lot can happen in that mile with low tires and a camper.
I know as I almost rolled my dune buggy not airing up when I got off the sand....it was just a few miles down the road to get home also.

Ya I wouldn't try with the camper and I couldn't find anything wider than 12.5s that aren't mud bloggers. I wish I could get slotted mags or turbine wheels in modern sizes. My father said he tried tubes once before and the wear through at valve stem and leak. Guess I'm gonna go wheel shopping
