E40D Trans Questions

Hi,

I have a couple of questiions about the E40D trans in my 1991 F350 equipped with a 7.3 IDI.

1) What is the normal rpm level for shifting? I noticed when shifting into overdrive the truck seems to shift later than I would expect. Mine shifts at almost exaclty 3000 rpms. When I first drove the truck I was concerned something was wrong with the trans, but then convinced myself that this was somehow normal. I've gotten into the habit of letting off the accelerator in allow for a smooth shift into overdrive, rather than staying on the gas to force the system to shift on its own. When I stay on the gas and force the truck to shift, when the shift does occur, it seems hard to me. Much more so than on a modern vehicle. Is that normal?

2) I changed the transmission fluid and filter when I bought the truck and in recent days have noticed a small amount of transmission fluid on the driver side of the case on the linkage assembly (unsure of proper name for this item). Is this a common leakage point? The leak seems extremely minor at this point. I placed a piece of cardboard under the trans and not a single drop fell overnight. That said, the assembly on the driver side was wet with fluid.

3) I know really nothing about transmissions, so are there any key maintenance points I should consider or things I can do to tune and prolong the life of the transmission? T

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I think your shifting RPM is way too high. There is an adjustment for the FIPL (Fuel Injection Pump Lever) sensor that controls when it shifts. I don't have that procedure, but someone will probably be along shortly that can help you with it.

Thanks for the input! I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone else might have on how to make the adjustment.

Does anyone have any good photos of the adjustment screws? I was doing some research and found where a guy induced a serious short by adjusting the wrong thing sparks flew when adjusting FIPL - Diesel Forum - TheDieselStop.com

I'd like to avoid that guy's mistake. I've seen several detailed textual descriptions of how to adjust the system, but some photos to make sure I'm following the write path would be helpful if anyone has any. Thanks.

It's the two screws that hold the sensor in place. You loosen the screws and rotate the sensor.
