46 ford p/u model # ( WRONG ) ?
Hey Rick,
I can't find where I found the number but I came up with 19,706 > 59C's trucks that were made in 1945. I'll get back with ya to verify that number when i find it. But I jotted the number down in my notes when I seen it .

ok my information here will be a little out of order, i forgot to check this message board for a few days, sorry about that guys, so i missed several messages to me... Your correct biglee, there were 19,706 59C Pickups produced in 1945 for only $918 a piece! And yes production was allowed to begin again in late may. One of the 1945 ford pickups was the 31,000,000th Ford produced.
Vin numbers began at 99C-623330... in 46 they began with 699C-623330.
Original color of the pickup was limited to Village Green with Tacoma Cream on the grill bars, light trim, and door handles.
I think the others here who have joined in this conversation have told the rest of the details of this pickup. Which is GREAT. I sure would have loved to find these messages when i first got my 45.

Guys;
While rebuilding the front end and steering box, I noted that the steering box was bolted on to the frame and a piece of angle iron that was welded to the bottom of the frame. Which looked like an obvious add-on.
However, the box was correct for that year and application.
Are yours also that way or do they bolt directly to the frame?
It also turned out that the link from the steering box to the passenger side spindel was a passenger car type.
When I went to buy a new link (I thought that the bend in it was from an accident) I found out that the local old Ford parts place couldn't get a new/rebuilt link.
So I'm assuming that the previous owner lowered the box so that the passenger link would fit.
Comments?
Rick

Guys;
Forgot to add that a recent problem came up with the trans popping out of 2nd gear. The previous owner had the trans rebuilt.
I fixed it by using a trick I learned from my uncle. I also had this problem with my vintage (1939) racecar.
I put a thin washer made from a large vegetable can lid between the rear tranmission bearing retainer (outer piece that also has the mounting ears on it) and the bearing snap ring on the output shaft bearing.
Have you guys seen this problem?
Rick

Hey Rick,
My 2 top bolts on the gear box are thru the frame, but the bottom 1 is thru an angle. But the angle is part of a long frame on the inside of the frame to strengthen it. It starts at the tranny mount and goes just a little past the gear box. Mine was formed all in 1 piece including that angle iron your talking about.
My steering link to the passenger side also has a bend in it.

Lee;
Thanks for the info.
The angle iron on mine is only about 1 ft long. Just enough for the box to bolt to.
Currently looking at replacing the 59A with a Lincoln/truck Flathead (337ci). Should be an interesting swap. Bellhousings should be interesting. Probably will have to take the 317 truck bellhousing and modify it for the standard 3 speed. Found a 2X2 intake and Edmunds heads. Should be fun.
Saw a guy at a swap meet with a McCullough blower pushing through a 2X2 intake.
Now that would be neat! But I'm too cheap to pay the $2K for the setup.
See ya
Rick

Haven't checked yet. Am traveling in Minneapolis this week. Should find out later this week. The engine is most likely an AB. Don't think I've ever seen a casting with just 59A. Doesn't mean much though I've seen N, L, Z and AB.

Hi Rick,
My engine number is 6 inches in front of the firewall on the driver side frame. Had to rub it down pretty good before I could read mine. Mine starts with 99C- which is a 1945. 99A- is a 1946. Check this site out. Flathead Model ID 1945 Trucks Also,check this site out . It shows my ID tag in the glove box. Hotrodders Photo Gallery - ID tag in glove box Hope this helps you, Lee

Some of the early 48s still had the 59C engine, then later on in the production used the new 8RT, or what is known as the 8BA. The 99C was commercial, and 99A was Passenger.
As for the 59C that was the commerciaal Engine or Truck, the 59A was the Passenger.
As for the 4700 that is definitly 1/2 ton. In Canada the 48-50 1/2 Tons in the Fords were designated F-47, meaning 4700 lbs. The Mercury was designated M-47, same weight as the Ford 4700 lbs.
It wasn't until 1951 that Canada had the F-1 Ford, & M-1 Mercury. Then in 1953 F-100, Ford, & M-100 Mercury.
Further on in some of the history of these Trucks, lets use as an example a 1946 Model wasn't sold in the model year. Yet it sold the following year still new it was licensed and registered as a 1947.
You might not pick up this info in a book, as I received it from Guys who sold these Trucks and the ones who I knew didn't know each other, this is where my info comes from, the horses mouth..

Hey guys, I have been cleaning up my '46 frame with a sandblaster and have a question about the VIN on the frame. I know I have asked this question before, but I was hoping that since people were looking at this I would like to pose the question again.
Every transmission VIN I have seen has a dash in it ie *699C-111111*. Here is a pict of one that I swiped from an ebay sale:

So here are the questions that I have:
1. Does your frame have the dash.
2. For those that have 1/2 tons, how close is your "C" to the one in the pict.
Someone in the past did some sloppy welding on the frame for the steering box and I want to make sure that I don't mess up the VIN as I clean up the welds.
Thanks
