46 ford p/u model # ( WRONG ) ?
Hi all,
I've bought this 46 ford p/u as a 46 ford truck.
BUT, looked at the model number in the glove box and it shows 59C. By my findings on the internet at :http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...1945trucks.htm, I found that this is a 45 pickup. Was this truck made in the later part of the 1945 and they considered it a 46 ?? Or is it a 1945 ? What is your thoughts on this one ? Has no title and in the works on getting one shortly ,but need to know what year to put on the title.
Also, the engine number of the truck, the first three numbers are 99C-.
Looking at this at the same site above, that I used for the model #, I find that there is no 99C- #s . Only 99A- #s for 1946 ford p/u. It doesnt show any serial #s for 1945! What is your thoughts on this one too?
Also, is this a 1/2 ton or a 3/4 ton p/u? Has 10 leafes on the rear axle and 8 leafs on the front axle
Can someone decode this for me ? Model number-59c Engine number 99C-689499 4700 lbs
Thanks, Lee

Congrats... you have a 1945.. one of the more rare ford pickups... least thats what i gather from my knowledge
i have a 1945 and the Vin number located on the frame starts with 99C as does yours and i dont know where u found the 59C in the glove box, but yes that is a 1945 model.. the 5 in 59C indicating the year. *it went to 69C in 1946*
You can usually tell if its a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton by looking at the wheel base.. 1/2 ton had a 114 inch wheel base and a 3/4 ton had a 122 inch wheel base.
The original Flathead v-8 for this truck should be a 59-ab.

Hey dustof45,
Thanks for all the info. You have helped me out alot. Going to e-mail you soon. Hope to keep in touch.
As for the idetification tag in the glove box,it has the engine #,model # and 4700 lbs max. gross weight stamped on it. The ident. tag is held in place on the inside of the glove box door by 2 screw that holds the glove box handle in place.
Thanks, Lee

Hey Lee, welcome tho FTE!
As far as the size of the truck, the plate on my '52 f-1 1/2 ton has the gross weight as 4700 lbs. also, so I think that it's safe to assume that the pickup is a 1/2 ton, especially if the wheelbase checks out.
Hope we can help you out more. I'm in the proccess packing and moving so I may be a little slow on the replies for the next couple days. Good luck on your truck!

dustof45:
Where did you find the VIN on the frame of your truck?
I have also what I believe is a '45 and have partially restored it. It's now back on the road.
The ID tag on the glove box door had a big hole in it where the previous owner put in a stereo.
Thanks

Hi Rick,
My engine number is 6 inches in front of the firewall on the driver side frame. Had to rub it down pretty good before I could read mine. Mine starts with 99C- which is a 1945. 99A- is a 1946. Check this site out. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...1945trucks.htm Also,check this site out . It shows my ID tag in the glove box. http://hotrodders.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=1627 Hope this helps you, Lee

46 ford p/u model # ( WRONG ) ?
Think you're off just a bit on some info according to my references.
(5)99C would be the prefix for 1945 1/2 ton V8
59 = model year, 9C = half ton V8
699C would be prefix for 1946 1/2 ton V8
69 = model year, 9C = half ton V8
99A is the designation for sedan deliveries

Hi mtflat and all,
I appoligize for the mistake I made. Yes for a 1946 ford TRUCK it was 69C. And this will clarify where the engine number is too.
From 1932 through 1948 vehicles, Ford Motor Company stamped the serial number into the top of the driver's side frame rail in three locations. This same number was also stamped into the top of the transmission-to-engine housing portion of the transmission. This location was visible when the floorboard and trans cover plate were removed. Of the frame stamped serial numbers, only the forward-most stamping was visible when looking down into the engine compartment (located between the front crossmember and the dash (firewall). The two other frame locations are visible only when the body is removed from the frame. The serial numbers were metal stamped with numbers/letters approximately 1/4" in height. The number (including the prefixes shown) was always preceded by (and followed by) a stamped "star" similar to an asterisk. It is believed that this was done to prevent someone from fraudulently adding a digit to the beginning or ending of a serial number in order to alter its identification.
Srry all, Lee

Gents;
I have a book at home that says in May of '45 Ford was allowed again to produce trucks by the War Production Board. I seem to remember that it was in the 10,000 range. Can anyone corroborate that #?

Nothing to apologize for Lee - can't tell you how many times I've posted and later gone "oops" Ford didn't exactly make collecting this info easy for us.
It's good to have all you newer guys around here. Looks like you've got some good resources there at your disposal.
I hang out mostly in the 48-60 forum, but occasionally stick my nose in here too..... RC, I can't help - don't have any production numbers here.
The 48 pickups changed sheet metal and engines, but a good bit of the chassis stuff is the same. My half ton is the same 114" wb, same 4700 GVW and has 10 rear leaf springs and 8 leaves up front. Clutch stuff is basically the same, etc, etc.
