I have a 1948 F2 Express Box going on my 52 F3. The 48 running boards are different than the one NOS 52 running board I have. Was this a design improvement or more of a cost saving measure?
It looks like I can trim the 48 and bend a lip in it like the 52. Or I can just leave it like it is and save a lot of work.
You would think the 48 might be stronger as it is bolted to frame rail but, the cracks make me wonder.
A NOS Express board!! Truly made of unobtainium. But the question is about the earlier style board. It would scare me to cut that board and try to add the lip, just my paranoia. The early board has to be mounted before the cab (can't be slipped in afterwards to my understanding). Otherwise they are the same. My guess the reason for the change was material savings, and maybe the easier removal/installation. Stu
Probably a major savings in making the part. I'd bet there was at least two less stamping procedures to the newer style. Plus maybe, like Stu stated, there might have been a slightly different assembly sequence that saved two minutes a vehicle.
Stu, I think you may be talking about panel truck running boards. I took these off the F2 easily and they go on easy. Slides right on like the newer style but, has additional bolts to the frame rail.
I don't have a used new style to see how they held up after all these years. The early ones have a few cracks going across the wider section. Maybe it would be stronger if I added a piece of angle where the long bend is. The newer one is almost boxed there the way it is bent.
Guess I better lock the NOS one up somewhere safe.

I've just got it wrong. Thought I'd read here what I wrote.
I'll offer to let you lock that board up in my shop. I don't mind, really .
