I noticed that the original running boards on my F-3 had the extra "flanges" but the ones on my original F-1 don't. I wonder if it might have something to do with the series model. Perhaps the larger trucks had the flange and the smaller ones didn't...not sure.
I think that the 48-50 had the flange and the 51, 52 didn't have it. All the aftermarket running boards don't have it.
My 49 F1 has the flanges. I bought a set of boards from a F3 with the Express bed from a wrecking yard awhile back that didn't have the flange but I can't remember what year it was.
The F1 you picked up from me, didn't have flanges on the running boards, looked just like the 2nd to last pick you posted.
I may still have pictures of them on my computer, I'll email them over to you if I find them, since the board won't let me post an attachment for some reason.
I think the flanged boards were on pre-'50 trucks. My '49 F-2 had the flange and I have had an assortment of sizes of '48-52 parts trucks and I if can remember correctly, the post '50 models had the non-flange type but, like with other parts used on these trucks there are no clear rule on what parts when on the trucks. Whatever part they had in the plant was used. I assume Ford changed to the non-flanged boards later in production to save on materials and stamping costs. They probably figured they could save 5 cents a board in materials and 25 cents in labor by going with the later design. Multiply that amount by a couple of hundred thousand and it adds up. There is no real use for the wide flange that I can think of.
Bob,
I think you're on to something. It looks like Ford made quite a few changes in mid 1950. Heck, on the running board alone they could save several square feet of steel as well as 5 bolts per board....shoot, thats enough to add up to some considerable Christmas bonuses for the bean counters up in the main office.
The pickup boards changed from flanged ones to non-flanged at the time they changed the bed sides in mid 1950. One of the many $$ saving changes they made.
I have seen multiple parts magazines advertise running boards for 51, but not 52s. Is it safe to say that the 51s work on the 52s. Sorry to jump your thread by the way, but I hadn't seen anywhere to really put this.

48-52 boards are interchangeable. Either will fit on any year between 48-52. I just wanted to know why some had flanges and some didn't.
