So, had a transmission fluid leak. Couldn't find the leak so I went to a transmission shop. The diagnosis is that a snap ring broke and resulted in a hole in my tranny, something about reverse gear pressures weakly designed snap ring.
Not too happy about this, being that I had thought that the transmission was the strong point of my truck... Can someone explain this to me. Is this common?
It is common on early 2005 trucks. Ford redesigned the snap ring for the 2005 model year. the new snap ring didn't stay in the groove and came out, usually through the side of the case. They changed back to the original part midway through the 2005 model year.
Some people will be along shortly to tell you this was a recall item. It was NOT a recall. There was a Customer Satisfaction program, which is not a recall. It has long since expired.
You could try contacting Ford, they might help with the repair. It's worth a shot.
Recall or not this is the announcement from Ford. All irrelevant but it gives a brief explanation of the condition common more so on plow trucks. It sounds like yours is too late. And here you go:
05B27--2005
TorqShift Transmissions, Trucks with Snow Plow Package:
On trucks built prior to 1-12-05, the snap ring on the low/reverse planetary may become dislodged due to the frequent forward/reverse shifting common when plowing snow. If this occurs, damage to the low/reverse planetary or transmission case may occur. Ford will disassemble the transmission, inspect for damage, and replace the snap ring with a revised part, if no other damage is found. This recall has been extended to 9-30-06, regardless of mileage
If you want to go with a 100% reman Ford unit with the new warrantee
give Ed a call at FICMRepair.com - FORD Powerstroke 6.0 FICM Repair, PHP Tuning and Truck Parts
When my trans went POOF I went that route and save a lot. Ed can get a very good
price on that unit and like I said you get the NEW better Ford Warrantee on it.
They ship if all ready to go short of flushing the old cooler and lines that need to be
done. It also will come with a new oil to air cooler and full of fluid.
Ford MSRP on the trans is over $3600 + the shipping.
BTW I will say that mine was around $2800 with the shipping. + the $1000 core that
you get back once the old one is back in there hands. Also the reman will have all the
updates done. The one think I would of liked but that did not have an option for is the
08 Pan and Filter.
Shipping time was very fast. Just a few days is all.

The key is the "B" I highlighted above. "B" means Customer Satisfaction program. A recall will always have either an "S" (Safety) or an "E" (Emissions.) Those are the only two reasons a recall can be done by law.

Yes, that's correct.
Also, this announcement had an expiration date, disqualifying it as a recall.
Thanks for the replies. Been working a LOT lately and haven't had a chance to check back. Not too happy, that I only found out about this customer satisfaction deal after my tranny took a poop. So much for MY "customer satisfaction". It would have been nice to receive some kind of notification. I'll try Ford Corporate and see what they say, but not too confident. Seems if they were really concerned about their customer's satisfaction, they would have sent out notices to all original owners. Maybe I they sent out notices to only snow plow package models? But what about the rest, like mine?

The announcement was for Ford dealerships. If a truck rolled into the shop prior to the expiration date, it advised the tech of the common issue and Ford would make good on it. They didn't go out looking for owners back then to do the work like a "recall". It was more of a courtesy thing back then.
You are well past the expiration 09/30/2006 so it's all out of pocket.

Sometimes they help. But if you threaten, "I'll never buy another Ford," I know they will NOT help.
When I worked for Ford I had a distant relative with a Taurus with a problem the dealership couldn't or wouldn't fix. I pulled some strings and got the field engineer from that region to go to the dealership to see what he could do. My idiot relative told him first thing that he would never buy another Ford. The field engineer told him there was nothing he could do for him. Later the engineer told me he could have worked with the dealership and probably fix it. But he wasn't going out of his way to help someone that had an attitude like that and obviously wasn't going to remain a customer.
Moral of the story: You get more things fixed with honey than vinegar.
