Was puttering around and decided to take a look see under the cap. I guess there's enough clearance now? Jeez.
Have a few hundred miles maybe on new wires, cap and rotor. Maybe 500 or 1000 on new distributor. Y block 292. The cap is (I thought) a good quality reproduction sold by well known vendor. Hm. It did seem to be kind of a bitch to get the clips on over the cap, is there something else going on here?
Yep, it (rotor) didn't want to come off, it was stuck on there a little bit. I will take some measurements, but will put the old cap and rotor back on. I thought it ran a little smoother anyway
Just another thought. Check how much up/down play is in the distributor shaft. There is a part on the lower part of the shaft ( don't know the correct name ) that prevents the shaft from moving upward from the force of the spiral drive gear..

You read my mind, this is the concern. I may pull the dizzy just to look see if everything is wearing OK.
The cap did not seem to have a good fit at all though, and was a real pita to get the clips on. Maybe there was some mold flash preventing the rotor from seating properly but that seems a stretch. I'll have to measure the caps and rotors and see if there's anything way off. Hopefully the distributor is not the problem here.
No dial indicator, but my calibrated elbow measures the free play a bit under an 1/8", don't know what the spec is though. Another used distributor in my junk drawer has about the same?

I looked at a few of mine, one had about an 1/8 the other two where about 1/16. There is two areas that allow movement, the shaft to bottom of the body where the collar is on the shaft and the point cam to shaft.
OK. Yep, the distributor free play is more than a 1/16th, under an 1/8th, think that's about normal then. I put an old Motorcraft cap back on. Fits perfect.
Sure have spent enough money on parts that don't fit, or don't work right, over the years.
