distibutor confusion

In the process of tuning up my truck and putting in a Petronix ignition I have ran into a interesting problem. My old rotor was wedged onto the shaft by wrapping the shaft with tape to make it fit tight. I am trying to mend my misguided ways(hey, it ran that way for two plus years). The rotor has the flat on one side to match up with shaft, but is way to loose. The shaft has the flat part and also has a shoulder about 3/8" down from the top that continues the flat. The rotor rests on that shoulder. My local parts store originally sold me a '57 cap and rotor. That doesn't come close to fitting. I am taking the distributor to the store tomorrow and get one of the old timers to help me out. The truck is a '56 and so supposedly is the engine. Any suggestions?

I think you just need a cap and rotor for a 56. The cap and rotor changed in 57 on cars and 58 on trucks witch was used up to 74. Sounds like you are trying to use the later one.
