I haven't had any issues, but I think if you have one of these trucks you have to put regular maintenance things like ball joints, shocks, break pads etc,I also said I just had a heater core and new water pump installed not because it needed it,but because it is a 10 year old truck.
Those issues are issues,, if you want a vehicle,, ANY vehicle!!
No shot at you you are very knowledgable and very good at what you do,,however there are small town shops just like ours that have just as knowledgable people who don't charge an arm and a leg.
Truce???? Lol. I know we're expensive. I just get defensive about anyone saying it isn't worth it. Mostly I fabricate my own anxiety. Lol
Oh alright, truce!you remind me a lot of my self.when I us d to build engines for drag cars I would get plum irate if somebody talked trash about my mustangs
Last phrase is,, money comes n goes, but a crappy job will last the lifetime of that truck. Not trying to say that the person you are using is sub par. But it's a proven fact that you get what you pay for.
I got caught in that trap ONCE. Anyone that knows me knows my story about having a "cheap" job done on my truck. The cheap oil cooler job has since cost me $7k or more and I think I can even blame the latest blown HPOP on that shop (or at least I'm going to, because it will make me feel better).
At the end of the day, I decided I will do all the work that I am able to myself. That way I know exactly what is done to the truck.
Lastly...I think the advantage here for you is fixing a truck you already has should bring peace of mind, rather than buying another truck that you have no previous knowledge of. You could be buying someone else's pile of problems. At least with this truck you know it's recent history...
Well after being snowed in today, and doing some thinking,I'm gonna go ahead and fix the hg's.monday I will try and locate a machine shop locally that does 6.0 heads as the shop that built my race engines I don't think worked on diesels.is this something that any good shop can do? Also what all would you guys do while I'm in that far.
My HG went a couple weeks ago in my 07 @ 212k. I am getting a full rebuild + some extras. I have a long parts list. oem oil cooler, bpd egr cooler, arp studs, oem gaskets, stand pipes and dummy plugs, blue spring, garrett turbo, bpd 4 phase ficm, and oem PS pump. Gonna be around 5500 at the service shop + the aftermarket stuff from bpd and the studs.
The truck is still good shape, nice paint, nice interior. Plus it has all the stuff I have added to it over the years. dvd player, nav, bedliner, exhaust, tuner, tunes, nerf bars, etc. I am just going to keep it forever. It's a crew cab diesel truck, what am I going to "upgrade" to?
We already covered you don't need an oil cooler, but the nice SS screen on the pick-up side would be worth popping in there if you hadn't done that. Have them go through your turbo on the bench while it is out and clean it if it needs nothing else. Update your Turbo oil feed/return Line(s) - depending on what you have now. The new STC replacement fitting will come with the upgraded SS IPR screen so have 'em throw that in. A BPD style EGR cooler and clean the EGR, or delete it if you can. Maybe a new thermostat and degas cap, but you've likely done those based on other stuff you've mentioned.
Someone who's more familiar can speak to any PM work like injector o-rings, pushrods and I think it was rocker arms? or cups?
Bottom line is these guys are giving you sound advice: it is a truck you already know and once you've done this work can just drive it and do normal maintenance for many a year to come...

Since you're in that far; the lifters are approximately $12 each. My 6.0 w/ 268k miles is now in need of a cam due to one broken lifter.
IMHO at 140k miles your psd is barely broke-in. If it's paid off think of these repairs and upgrades as the truck note you're not making. New diesels are not cheap. I'm currently driving my daughter's '08 6.4 KR and yes the creature comforts are nice like the in-dash navigation, heated seats, back-up camera, etc. However I like the '05-'07 dashboard layout, door pockets and armrests, cup holders much more. Plus I hate the DPF regen.
Also if you have the heads off at 140k, you're crazy not to have them gone through for worping, cracks, spring tension, seats, guides, etc.
