The concept is sound, and most of us have heard of swirl-port heads. The idea is to keep the air-fuel mixture rotating within the combustion chamber for more complete and efficient burn. However, with the lower CFM (cubic feet per minute) of airflow required on a street vehicle, these things are practically useless. This is because the air is moving much slower than a race car's, and the air must make several turns before it enters the combustion chamber ... thereby diffusing whatever "swirl" is induced by the Tornado-device.
If you're driving nothing but full throttle at all times. go for it.
I tried and returned the Tornado on my '02 V-10 'X.' Could not see any difference. Best highway milage last fall with Tornado and K&N air filter was 13.5 on the overhead, 13.0 actual. Just recently took a trip back from Columbus to Cleveland and the overhead read 14.5, best EVER. Actual was probably 14.0. I have the 3.73 gear. THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT WORK ON A V-10. Also, it surprises me to see 15 - 16 mpg claims from the V-10. My 'X' is an Ultimate with leather and DVD. Maybe it is slightly heaver than a stripped down XLT?
Been traveling with mine this week and got 10...9.9 on overhead...I have the Limited and 33" tires...I think the 4.30 rear and the tires are determining a lot....
Thank you all for your advice...The Tornado will just stay on the late night infomercials.....
I would like to get better MPG....I am waiting for a Performance Products custom programmed JET chip and a Gibson side swept exhaust....Already have the K&N...I was a bit disapointed with the K&N though...I can't notice any performance or MPG differance....
Hopefully my chip will be in today and I can see tomorrow with a trip to LA how it does...Will take tools incase I don't like it...
I had a Durrango with the 360 in it and I installed the Jacobs Electronics in it and got 3MPG more....with the increase in MPG came power too...I just drove harder and got the same MPG...I amhoping that since SWMBO drive the X most that we can actulally see the MPG increase....
Anyone have experience with Jacobs or MSD on the V10? Any improvements?
I regularly get 12MPG city (calculated, not overhead indicator) with my V10 Limited 4x4, 3.73 differential gearing. Have gotten 11.3 towing 5200# on a 600 mile round trip, including a few hill crossings (Appalachian Mountains). I have also gotten 16MPG (not towing) during a day trip to the "hills" and back.
The only thing I've done is increase the front tire pressure to equal the rear .... running 60PSI at both ends. It boggles the mind WHY Ford says to use a lower PSI up front when it seems most of the weight is up there ... especially when not carrying anything but two adults.
Originally posted by guruatbol Anyone using one of these Tornado Fuel saver devices? Any input would be good.
Four years ago, Alberta Environment tested this device for 12 months. They found no difference in fuel economy. The device is no longer for sale in Alberta and as far as I am aware, anywhere in Canada anymore due to this.
I know I will be suspected of working for the company at least an unnamed Middle East oil state, but here goes: I absolutely could not believe that such a device would/could work. Then my brother put one in his Excursion and reported a 1.5 to 2.0 increase in MPG. I figured I woud prove him wrong so I got one and put it in my wife's Navigator. Guess what? A 1.5 increase! I would have thought that the restriction in air flow would produce the opposite effect.
My new theory is that the gadget has an electronic component (hidden, of course, and built by the CIA) that causes the overhead computer to read higher.
Seriously, I can not explain it but it does appear to work.
The local "buy it and try it" guy on the news here tried it in a early 90's Burb. He filled up and drove 200 miles in a big circle and stopped right back at the same gas station where he started. He then put in the tornando and drove the same 200 miles at the same speed and returned back to the station and he lost .5 mpg WITH the tornado. So in my opinon they are a waste of money.
