I have a T98A in my 63 F350 which is pretty well shot (from corrosion not wear). I have found a source for most of the parts I would need to rebuild it but the cost will be nearly $1000. So I am on the lookout for a used one. I find a lot of transmissions listed on Craigslist where the specific model is not identified so I was wondering if anyone knows for sure in what years Ford offered the T98A in their F series trucks?
Came across couple sites with paragraph or two on the T98, T18, and NP435. As indicated the Ford T98 was offered from 48 thru 1964; whereas, the T18 was offered from 65 thru 79.
Not an authority, perhaps more knowledgeable member can advise.
If unable to locate a used, or parts for the T98, and since the T98 and T18 are very similar, perhaps swapping for the T18 would be an another option, seems a used, or parts for the T18, would be more available? I would contact reputable trans shop, and/or local or online part supplier's and inquire what would be involved if decide to swap tranny's, imagine minimum requirement would need to exchange input shafts???
Dave, thanks for posting these 4 links. I have not gone thru them at this time but will just for the knowledge gained.
I'd like to ask a question to all following this post now. Does anyone know for sure, if the T-98 and the T-18 have the same bolt pattern to the bell housing, yes or no?
Thanks, Cap
There is a little bird telling me that while they may have the same bell housing pattern (I don't know for sure), I would be willing to bet the the T98 input shaft is longer than that of a T18/T19 from a later Ford truck. I don't know this for sure - it is just a hunch I have.

NO....The T98 and T18 do not interchange.
OP: The T98 used from 53-64 will work for you. The early(48-52) T-98 is similar, but uses a different mounting system and BH pattern.
If only you lived closer to Connecticut. I have at least 5 of those transmissions lying around my garage taking up space!
Please don't get rid of them yet. Do any of them have a PTO? I am not opposed to a road trip. I have a lead on a transmission in Alabama but I won't be able to check it out until February.
