So for years I ran a black CPS in my truck. The part number was 1821720C99. Things were great until it started to go south and the truck started to die intermittently. So I bought 2 new CPSs from Clay and they were here lickety split in true Clay fashion. Well, the new CPSs are gray and have a part number of 1876736C91. *Disclaimer* the CPS issues are in no way related to Clay. They are Ford OE parts and I thank him for the business he runs and speedy service he delivers*
I ran one for about a month and the truck would randomly die like before. I changed out one of the new ones with the other new one yesterday and the truck died twice today.
I know the CPS has been redesigned and changed over the years but this sucks. I tried to pick up a 1/4 open end wrench with the gray CPS and it can't even lift it. The old black one picks it up with ease. Are there better CPSs out there than the gray ones? International had a blue one at one point and my truck didn't like that one either. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Anyone? I'm considering trying the Masterpro CPS from OReillys. Autozoo has one made by Delphi. Before I buy I may see how strong the magnet is to see if it's similar to my old black one.
Usually people have found issues running aftermarket CPS's, especially when they windshield wipers are in the intermittent setting. The fact you have tried pretty much all the OEM CPS's and are still having issues makes me wonder if there isn't another cause to your problems? Have you checked the wiring going to the CPS? There are also issues where the truck can shut down due to a hot IPR when the solenoid starts getting weak, does the truck start right back up once it shuts down, does it shut down only when hot?
It seems to do it more when it's cold or been running less than 30 min. I need to trace back the wires from the CPS to make sure there's nothing grounding out.
No codes, at least not hard ones. I do have a DP Tuner F6 that I've had for years with no issues.
When it dies, I have to pull over put it in park and restart it.
Take your F6 Out and try again. I don't mean dropping it down to stock.... Remove it. If you didn't clean ALL the silicone off your J3 connector, your chip will go intermittent. I'll give you one hint how I know.....
I believe I may have figured out the problem. I have been running one of the ELM code readers that broadcasts WiFi to DashCommand. I've been running it for about a year but I've noticed that the only times the truck dies is when that is running. I've disconnected it from the OBDII port and have been running it for 3 days now with no hiccups. I remember reading something on here about cheap ELM readers from China. Maybe I got a bad one.
Good to hear that you probably got it figured out. I went with the OBDLink MX bluetooth version based on some recommendations here and have been very happy with it. It has paid for itself on the truck and the VW Beetle my wife drives.
