I seem to not be catching a whole lot of luck lately. The rear end on my F550 has a bunch of play. Going reverse to drive it clunks pretty bad but no ujoints are bad. I can rotate the yoke by hand and hear clunking so i am guessing the ring and pinion are bad, at 100,000 miles. Seems like the rear ends should be more stout than that, certainly look it.
Does anyone know where to find a source for reman third members since this one had a drop out? Most axle places won't touch it
Update to close this thread out! I thought about dropping a used in place but had uncertainty to how they were maintained.
I finally ended up having the drop out pulled and the shop found one carrier bearing race that had some pitting in it. This was causing the whine. Ring and pinion pattern looked perfect and oil was really clean as well. Total out the door was $1,500 for both carriers and pinion bearing with seal. Kind of steep but it is quiet again.
I do still have clunk going into reverse but will grease slip joint with xg8 first.
Thanks for updating this thread with your solution. Reps sent for following up. Your experience will no doubt help a future searcher put their mind at ease in that their own F-550 axle is repairable.
