For about the past 2 months I have been noticing a loud clunk comming from my rear drivetain whenever i would shift from park to drive or from park to reverse. So i natrually thought that my rear u-joints were bad since i could get some play out of my rear driveshaft. Well I repaced them and im still getting that same clunk. So i took it to my mechanic and they had one of their guys lay under the truckand another guy shift. Turns out that its inside my rear diff. Just recently it has begun to clunk when i turn right at slow speeds. My question to you guys is should i replave the whole diff, or do you think i just need new berings? Oh i have an 8.8 with 3.55. any ideas would help
You can pull the back cover off, and check to see where the slop is, whether it's the carrier or axle shafts. My guess is the pinion gear is either worn or missing a tooth. If so you will find the metal chunks in there.
I am going through the same problem I found that the pinion bearings where shot I had no choice but to replace the whole rear the housing where the pinion goes through is oblonged.
when you get the cover off if there is no metel chunks you may just have a bad axle bearing if so change both it's pretty easy to change them you can use a slide hammer to remove the bearings and seals. They also make a offset bearing if the axle is worn.
I searched for a rear end all over for mine and the only peaple who could help me was junkyarddog.com good luck Peter
