one word of advice make sure the 460 is externaly balanced i ran into that problem when i replaced my old 460 with a rebuilt one the engine builder i used told me that ford had an external and a internal, come to find out ford never made an internal balanced 460 for the trucks in fact it wasnt tell 1980 the 460 truck moters came with a standerd tranny and they were all externaly balanced anything earler came stock with an automatic....the 390 bell housing will work also
There is not much of a way to say this without it sounding harsh. In no way do I mean to be so. But, whoever gave you your info, led you astray.
There are plenty of 78 and back internally balanced, truck 460's out there in F series trucks and E series vans.
As well as 4 speed, 460 powered trucks before 1980.
The 460's became externally balanced in 79 and continued until they quit making them. It was somewhere around this time frame the 460 became strictly a truck motor. They dissapeared in the trucks after 79 and came back in 83. Though it was my understanding they were still offered at this time in the big E series vans.
And the 390 bellhousing will not bolt to a 460. I have heard people say a 390 manual transmission flywheel will fit on a 460 but I can't verify this fact.
Once again, I don't mean to dog you, just giving the facts to the best of my knowledge.
superdave your absolutely right and the 390 flywheel will fit the 460 as long as you use an internally balanced 460. I would imagine all the fe flywheels will work except for the 428 (and I think one other but don't know) cause the 428 is externally balanced.
351m-400 flywheels will interchange with a 460 I believe
and yes the e series vans did have 460 in the later models I know this one for sure because I get a 94 e350 in my shop every once in awhile that has a 460 in it (been trying to talk this guy into getting a new van and selling this one to me for awhile now I think that's why he keeps it around :P)
but anyways just trying to help if I'm wrong on any of this then someone please let me know
boy i tell you no one around here in denver can give you a stright answer. i called all around denver and everone was sayin that ford never had a manual trans internaly balanced 460 what a headache i went through trying to find a fly wheel that was zero balanced. i wound up getting mine mechined .well i guess i learned. thanks for settin me stright Superdave
