Engine swap?
I just bought an 83 F100, 300i6, 4sp man,150k. It runs good, gets 14 mpg, but timing chain is stretched to about 12 degrees play. It is hard to start due to timing. The hp is down. Have to drop to third to pull small hills. My question is: a crate 300 is a grand. Is it feasible to drop in a small v8 without having to change too much? Will motor mounts bolt to i6 frame brackets? Will 4sp(10 in clutch) bolt to v8? Will trans crossmember need to be moved? Basically, which way will be least expensive? I have access to a v8 in great condition for 500. Any help would be nice. Thanks.

check the starting and charging system as well as timing. the hard starting can be fixed cheaper than an engine swap.
the above post is right about the long life of these engines.
as for the down shifting and horsepower issue, i'll bet you have 3.08 or similar gearing, and would benefit from a gear swap. this will give more kick in the pants.
