engine swap?

hey everyone. i am kinda new to the whole truck performance thing, but am currently getting WAY into this. I was into cars for a while, but decided to go with a ford ranger 91' xlt 3.0l 6cyl. I was wondering if anyonw knew whether it would be better to upgrade the engine, or keep the one i have and just make it fast. If i go with a new engine, i was thinking of going with a chevy v8. The only reason i would go with the chevy is because it is a)cheaper and b)my mechanic next door knows a chevy better. So my question is, is it better to keep the v6 and try to make it fast, or is it better to put a v8 in it? Any help would be great. thanks.

Hello & Welcome to FTE. I'm sure you'll learn alot here. Just so you know, this forum is for non technical issues only. It's where we hang out and talk about "general things". You may want to post this in the "Ranger" forum which will get the attention of people who really know your truck. Good luck with your decision.

I realize I'll probably catch a lot of flak and flaming because of this reply, but why did it take three people to tell white_lightning that he was posting in the right forum? There were three minutes between the first and second posts so it's possible that they were being written at the same time, but seven minutes b/t the second and third

I mean come on people, be nice to the newbies. They don't know their way around the site yet--that's why they're "newbies"

*Studiezz his keyboard, and wonderezz...*

Okay, I can see the "Jump on it" thing, and also the "Help" side of it all.

The guy is new....

It's one thing to point someone in the right direction, and another to make them feel GUILTY about it.

I realise we have to keep everything in the forums where they are the most helpful, and I support that all the way

Try to be tactfull - as much as possible.

Those who inputted - re-read what is here and put yourself in the position of someone who doesn't know anything about these boards. Pretend you ARE them.

What would your impression be?
(be honest)

In light of that, would you re-word it?

-My thought for tonight....

Just thought I'd comment. Mine being the second post, the other post was not there when I began my reply. Once I submitted it, though, it was there. Just an honest mistake. Please don't take any offense white_lightning. We just wanted to be sure you were welcomed to this great site.

ok well, first off let me say sorry for posting in the wrong forum, i just didn't know where to post it, and being from a previous site where the general forum is where you post tech questions i did so. So, i am sorry, thankis for pointing in the right direction. But, i also want to say thanks for the warm welcome by all of you who seem to take offence to me making a mistake. If you could take the time to read, that was my first post and only been a member for all of 2 days. Thank-you for those of you who seem to actually care about what the newbies think and try to help them. You probably won't see me on here much in this forum anymore though, maybe the people in the ranger forum can/are willing to help. thank-you everyone.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Apr-02 AT 10:42 PM (EST)]Hi and I'm sorry you feel this way.Apology accepted !
Manure happens.

We have hashed over all sorts of reasons on why people end up posting on what ends up being the wrong forum. In fact there is a thread pertaining to this thought.

This site is considered very organized, for easy navigation & use.

The text underneath the title "General Conversation" forum is sometimes over-looked and I sometimes ask people what ways could it be improved to make it even easier and more noticable.
(Please, your thoughts?)

I too ,have noticed general con is DIFFERENT on other sites.

Putting the text " Do Not Post Truck Tech Questions...." was meant to acknowledge that,& is considered a good thing.

People also normally send you in the right direction while giving you a head's up on being the wrong place for this,I feel that no one had intention of insulting you.

This web site is highly regarded as a top Notch site for ford trucks

It is a known fact that it is not how someone says something or how they day it but, "How the person hearing it, Interprets it".

If you feel slighted, please take the time to see the best in people here, as it will be well worth your while.
(we have had a flurry of wrong postings lately)

So, on behalf of FTE & Ford trucks.com
, Welcome !

stephanolightning, please reconsider. I'll figure your question as chevy tech. Putting a chevy V8 into a ranger is certainly doable, put your going to need some engineering. None of the parts will be easily compatible. How about a 351W ford V8 ? A ford in a ford would go a lot smoother, and there is probably someone here who has already done it. Most of the pieces area available without having to reinvent the wheel . DF

hey, thanks, and i was not leaving this site, just the forum, but i know it will take engineering, but my ext door neighbor is a mechanic who does chevy's and he said all i'd need..i think..is a new flywheel. BUT, i'm not positive. And the reason i don't want to go with a ford engine is because (from what i've heard) they are more expencive, and chevy's are easier to find stuff for. But whats the difference between a ford 351 was it? and a chevy v8? i prolly won't do too much with mods to it, just as long as it is a good fast truck. It will prolly be for show purposes more than anything, but i wanna be able to take someone that revs on me. But, to keep from pissing more people off here, i posted this same question in the ranger section, if you could and want to help, post a reply over there.

I'd stick w/ a Ford V8 also. You can even buy a swap kit from Northern Auto Parts. Check it out:
