Trailer axle alignment, DO IT NOW.
aerodynamics ( Tow vehicle )
aerodynamics (between tow and trailer)
weight
rolling resistance
trailer wheel alignment is not high on the list.. so 5 % is a lot..
well done.
I just went through all of this and bought a replacement 3500 lbs rear axle for my Keystone travel trailer from Trailer Parts, Axles, Tires & Accesories | Sturdy Built The total price was around $125 for the axle, adjustable spring seats and shipping.
There was a trailer shop about 60 miles from me that would have rebent/cambered the axle, but of course the axle had to be with the trailer. So, the cost would have been much more. Now, I can swap the axle out in a couple of hours myself and do some maintenance to the hubs at the same time.
Big difference afterwards!
We drove out there for vacation with our Grandson and drove straight there without taking the trailer off until after the first fillup.
At the station I had drove 241 miles and filled up with 21.72 gal averaging 11.11MPG. Had to fill up before going into the area as they don't really have any stations in the National Park.
Never really seen over 10.2 - 10.4 on the instant gauge before the alignment before this but this trip was very good even through the roads are so rough that they can throw you off the back of the seats.
Coming home on hwy 99 they had a fresh paved section that was so smooth for about 35 miles with the cruise control on. I had reset the instant mileage gauge during it and I didn't believe what I seen at 12.7.
I waited to long to take the picture as it had got rough again and this was the best one that came from the ones I took.
I am really happy as the tires showed no more wear at the end of the 745 mile trip than at the beginning.
Used 64.74 gals of fuel, averaging 11.5MPG for all the miles driven in the mountains and hwys for the 5 days.
