1991 Ignition steering column issue
However the whole stalling out when shifting past neutral worries me. it doesnt sputter and die, it just kills, like you turned the key off. is something possibly grounding something somewhere? am i overlooking something?
I tore into the truck after work, and noticed the reason the truck was shutting off when i shifted into neutral was because the key was physically being shut off. like the rod was being forced to turn the tumbler.
I tore the colulm all the way down i discovered that the rod had gotten slightly bent. i tweaked it back, i went to replace it into the actuator rod, and when replacing the roll pin, one of the two ears that the roll pin goes through broke off. Im banking on the fact that the roll pin hovering over the rod going into the actuator rod is going to be good enough, and if it ever comes out, i'l be upgrading to the steel one for next time.
reassembly was the reverse of removal, and now the truck fires up with the key switch on command, shifts easily into every gear, and is once again road worthy. the only casualty in this job was the shift indicator cable broke, as it seemed very weak before i even started. I plan to remedy this by swapping in a manual transmission block out plate in the cluster and doing what i always do, count the gears.
Thank you for all your help.
