Does anyone have instructions for changing the ignition switch on a 95 F-250 the truck runs but will not turn off I have to pull the coil wire to get it to shut down.
Thanks in advance
Glen
There could be two issues here. First you could have a faulty ign./start switch. This is located on top of the steering column under the dash. With the engine running try pushing the rod attached to this switch by hand and see if the engine then shuts off. If not then that switch is probably faulty. The second problem could be the ign. switch actuator. This links the key switch to a rod which then runs down the column to the ign./start switch. This is the most likely fault. To replace the actuator you have to pull the steering wheel and remove the column shroud. The part is only a few $ but a pain to replace.
When you turn the key back towards off, does it click into the different positions? (LOCK, OFF, ACC)
If not the switch can be broken internally, the switch might have moved from it's original mounting position, or the actuator rod that moves the switch could be broken.
To get at the switch, lower the steering column (easier than trying to reach upside down and do this). It's mounted to the top of the column with two nuts. You can move the switch slightly towards the wheel or towards the firewall, retighten and see if that solves the problem. Over time a lot of these switches move a bit off from the correct placement.
There's a little metal rod that hooks into the switch coming from the lock cylinder. If the rod goes both forward and back with the turning of the key, you're in good shape. Reseat or replace the switch and put it all back together. If the rod won't come back towards the wheel when you turn the key towards off, you probably have a broken actuator, which is self-replaceable but a pain in the backside.
If that's the case, run a search for "actuator rod" and you'll find some detailed instructions.
