please help...more ignition problems
my 89 when you turn the new key/tumbler it turns the gear in the collom which pushes a rod forward down into a switchyou cant start it with the key but if you go back and forth enough it will turn on.
is something wrong with that switch?
everything else in the collom works out of it just the starting and getn the ignition on in the truck seams to fail
i am talking about the box on the steering collom down towards the bottom
any idea?
do i need to replace the switch then it should all work or is my collom messed up?

I don't know that particular unit, but I'm very good with wiring and stuff. Two suggestions, if the wires are accessible, disconnect the battery and check the switch for proper operation with a meter-continuity tester, again you MUST disc the battery. You caould also remove the switch, clean everything up real good, inspect for wear-damage and try again. If not replace it. From what you're explaining, if you mess with it it starts working, this leads me to believe that your assumtion on a switch problem is correct. Hope this helps.

Do you have the plastic cowling off around the steering column? It sounds like either that actuator rod that connects the key tumbler with the switch is broken or the switch is sliding back and forth. It's been over ten years since I worked on my 1988 F-150 for a broken actuator rod so I'm kinda rusty remembering. Report back whether you have the cowling off around the steering column and look for a broken actuator rod or sliding switch.

Before you cancel Christmas, loosen the two (10mm?) nuts that hold the switch on the column (if they aren't already loose) and slide the switch up and down the column. Turn the key off, then slide the switch in each direction until something happens, then split the difference and tighten them. Should take care of you.
