I'm current looking to buy a new to me truck and like what I see with the 2011 and up Fords. Are their years/models that are better or worse? What are the power ratings thru these years? Any suggestions would be great..
When I was in the market (last winter, spring) I was advised to shy away from the 2011 6.7 model; something about a high incidence of valves causing expensive engine failures. Ford fixed this problem with the 2012 model.
I had a early build 2011 F350 that I put 145,000 miles on. I had the normal wear. Shocks, Brakes, Batteries, Front Bearings, Coolant and tranny flush.
I did have two egt sensor go bad, One at 120,000 and one at 140,000 But Ford has reflashed the system so that should not be an on going problem. But even if it is, The sensors are a $40 part.
The 2011s are prone to Coolant or Oil leaks on the turbo. Again the coolant connector that failed on my was a $25 part, But you had several hours of labor to pull the turbo and replace it to stop a few drips of coolant. So it becomes a $500-$700 dealer repair if you take it in. I have not seen this as an ongoing common problem in 2012 and newer trucks.
Some of the early chassis cab trucks had the valve problems mentioned above.
The 2011-2104 6.7L engines have 400 hp. The 2015 and newer have 440 hp and a better exhaust brake. That does work better than the earlier 6.7L But I find my 2015 truck gets 1-2 mpg worse fuel mileage than my 2011 truck did.
In general though, This has been a very dependable engine/powertrain.
I would like to know actually how many 2011's actually have had the valve issue. I bet its less than 5 percent. I talked to my local dealer and they sell alot of super dutys, and the service manager told me he has never heard of the issue. I have a 2011 and it's been rock solid but I did buy it used. I have put 15k on it. But I would highly recommend buying a warranty with it.

It's pretty rare.
Most dealers have never swapped a 6.7L. Some of the high-volume dealers may have done a few here and there. Nearly all of the motors swapped have been 2011 with dropped valves, but again that's been few and far between.
I agree, he told me personally he has never even changed out a 6.7 due to a failure. And he has been at my dealer for quite a few years. Now egt sensors and def problems he said are the main issues he sees
