Does anyone know the size pipe-plug the DRAIN hole on the transfer case requires?
I've been doing some maintenance and noted that one of the PO's have all but stripped the plug installation/removal square hole.
I could just run to the store but, this is my only transportation and it took over an hour to get it out.
The other option is to put it in somewhat loose and remove it in a parking lot. Hoping it doesn't loosen on the ten mile trip and all the fluid drain out.
They are square drive on the transfer case I believe. Just like the differential.
To the poster, you could swap the upper and lower ones. The top one will not leak if you have it in there loose like you mentioned, since the fluid is below it. This would buy you some time and allow you to refill the case.
these are different size's. Smaller one-top and a large one-bottom. The dealer does not have them and does not know where to attain one. So, I'm calling a plumbing supply house.

Otherwise I can just have the Wife pick it up.
99 f250 - 100% stock
I was able to find the Ford part number for my 02’ f350 and a dealer that had one. If you have a 99.5’ year truck I’d imagine the number is the same.
transfer case drain plug- 6C3Z7A010A
during this search I also found the transmission drain plug number also if anyone needed it.
Old thread revival time! Does anyone know for certain what the dimensions are? Like the OP, I also went all over town to find a replacement, thinking it was a basic pipe plug... no dice.
Every plug on my truck takes a 3/8 ratchet or extension end to remove. Square drive. But Ford in their infinite wisdom figured you need to have multiple different tools with you when you go underneath to do fluid services. 🙄
After spending a half day going to auto parts, transmission, driveline, and general hardware stores... plus internet research... I've determined it is a metric size M22 X 1.50 (the same as a Ducati motorcycle or BMW engine oil plug.) Several Kenworth, Peterbilt, and International commercial trucks use this size for differential drain/fill plugs also.
