cracked radiator

well today I noticed my temp started to climb up to 210 which was strange not pulling anything and out side temp of 65 degrees. I pulled over and saw the degas bottle empty. I added 80oz of water and brought it up to normal.

after about 30 more miles I got back to work and it was empty and I could see a coolant drip under my truck. the radiator is cracked in the black plastic on the top just beside the return line that goes back to the degas bottle.

is it possible to have this fixed or is a new radiator my only option. Thanks for the help.

My local radiator shop won't work on them. I've changed two (different trucks) in the last year or so. What I found was: BeCool makes a nice one but the price was too high for me. Mishimoto makes a nice all aluminum one for a more resonable price. Ford will be happy to sell you another one like your currently failed one, again the price is high. Bullet Proof Diesel sells an "all metal" radiator for a very nice price but shipping was too high for my area. On eBay there are sellers of both the Mishi and one similar to the BPD with much less than retail prices. And finally, O'Rileys etc. have a couple of inexpensive, plastic tank options but didn't offer an all metal radiator. I suggest getting the best one your budget allows.

I paid $250 for a Motorcraft from Autonation White Bear/Tousley. The original lasted 12 years and the tank seams were still tight, it was leaking between the fins. I saw too many variances with fit to take a chance with an all aluminum one.

I believe so on the newer ones, not on mine.

Thanks for the help. I picked up this tool from oreilly's tonight. http://m.oreillyauto.com/mt/www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/LIS0/39960/N0716.oap?ck=Search_N0716_-1_-1&pt=N0716&ppt=C0374&un_jtt_redirect=un_jtt_iosV

How much Transmission fluid can I expect to loose after disconnecting these two lines?

Also is there any problem reusing my coolant. It probably only has 10k miles on it so far. Thanks for the help

Sure, just keep the coolant clean. I can't say exactly how much trans fluid but less than 2quarts if I remember correctly. (Motorcraft SP, LV, or the easier to find Maxlife fluid) Those quick connect fittings can be a booger to get out but they go back together easily.

Rusty thanks for the help as always. Got it changed out tonight in about 45 min and no leaks. One of the cooler lines was a pain but the rest was pretty easy. Thanks again

Performance radiator is the supplier for bpd's all aluminum radiator. They are 248.00 with free shipping but be aware that if you can pick it up from one of their warehouses, do so. If not you risk the chance of ups destroying it. The first two I received were destroyed. Performance radiator worked with me and sent it using ONTRAC as a shipper. I finally got a usable radiator.
