Well they are supposed to be. Everybody wants approx. 400 bones for a pair of them. I'm not poor, but I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. I waited till a pair of the Tru-Ram horns showed up on eBay and sniped them for $300. My truck is totally stock so there won't be any major difference but it should sound a lot better and maybe pull a little better. We'll see, Maybe tomorrow.
I put a set of used ram horns on my rebuilt 312 and they fit very nicely against the engine and clear the steering box. One thing with Y-blocks be aware of the flat lifters, recommend a oil for older engines that have sufficient ZDDP. I like Brad Penn racing oil but there are a lot of good oils out there that will work. There is a Y-block site y-blocksforever.com that discusses the PCV system. It does allow for the gases to escape better from the valley cover but you would have to do some work. I have the old side draft like yours. There is a filter that is changed inside of it. I had a 58 272 y block I bought, handn't been run for over 10 years, added gas and spark and fired right up!!
Never worried about the phosphorus or zinc levels too much though am now running a diesel rated oil "just in case" and drop a 500 mg Centrum Silver (for "Over 50") Multi-Vitamin w/ Ginko Biloba tablet down the oil fill tube every oil change.
NICE !!! my wife say's I need ginko, go figure. thanks for the info on the oil, I hadn't even thought about a high mileage oil. oooh, and there is a filter in the draft tube ??? I wonder if thats on the shelf some where ??? (just added another thing to the list)
