I was told, if the fan has resistance when trying to spin it when it's cold(motor has yet to be fired up), that the clutch is good. I get about a 1/4 rotation..

Don't believe it!
Okay, just wanted to use that smilie, never had a chance
But the point is, although I read several theories on "testing" the clutches, I didn't find any that were reliable.
They are stiff when cold, usually spin a moment when starting (especially cold weather), then stop unless hot.
I had the choice of several used ones, all felt a bit different, so I went with a new clutch (reuse my fan) from NAPA. It works. No overheating, and not constantly on.
I was surprised the other day climbing the big hill with relatively low strain (just wife and daughter with me, no trailer) and following slow traffic. Heard the fan kick on, so checked with Torque Pro and sure enough temp was about 212F and holding. It's a long, steep hill.
The way I justified the purchase: Regardless of what else is done, overheating kills oil and wears parts. Cooling MUST work properly.
Any one ever put an OBS (94-97 7.3) water pump and added a 6.0 fan to their SD? they direct more air, I had one on my OBS but disaster struck taking out my radiator, but the fan was to close . On a super duty I'm sure there's enough space for it.
I was simple following up on this thread, how it turned into a discussion again I will never know. How about you retards read the entire thread before just posting.
