I have a 91 302 that over heats only during stop and go traffic. Replaced the thermostat first. Then the water pump. Still to no avail.
I put a lower temperature thermostat in and it ran cooler until... The stop and go traffic during the heat of the day. I replaced the radiator and cap. No leaks. I do have a stout sensor problem according to the code. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Though the clutch could be going out, if your holding in the normal temp range at 30 mph I would think its okay. If you test the fan and find it in good condiction then I would take the radiator in and have it boiled out. It sounds like the rad might have a blockage in it.
Check the sending unit it could be faulty. Another way to check your temps is put a thermometer in the radiator opening and see what the temps are. If they are close to what your thermostat is then you are okay. Just be sure to take the rad cap of before the motor warms up so you don't have the water explode on you!!!! You can get a thermometer at any parts store for about 3 or 4 dollars and it can also be used to check how cold your a/c is blowing. Something nice to keep in the ole toolbox.
