My Explorer is running pretty hot, it has 130,000 miles. The gauge will sit anywhere from the M to past the L, especially when I’m sitting at a light in gear with the A/C on or climbing a hill. It takes a little while to get there but it gets there. I have flushed the system, put a new fan on, new thermostat, replaced the radiator since the other one corroded and put on a high performance water pump with increased flow. Still no change, can anyone offer some good suggestions? Thanks
Possibly the fan clutch. A good test is to remove it, unhook the end of the "spring" on the front of the fan clutch and rotate it 1/4 turn CCW. This removes the fan clutches response to temperature changes. Now the fan will behave more like a traditional fan. If this improves the cooling for your engine, then you need a new fan clutch.
My 93' Explorer had a similar problem after I'd replaced the fan, water pump, and radiator. During driving around town in hot weather, the temp gauge would hover between the "R" and "L". However, on the highway, the temp gauge would stay on the R.
I replaced the original fan clutch with an aftermarket one purchased at Advance Auto Parts for about $35.00. The problem disappeared, and the truck now runs a lot cooler. When I replaced it, I also Pulled the radiator and cleaned out the fins on the A/C condensor-the A/C also seems cooler now. Most of the aftermarket fan clutches and water pumps suggest replacing both at once if one or th other is worn out. Since you've already replaced the water pump, you should be able to get by with just the fan clutch. Hope this helps.
