Security

I was wondering, since my Ex has this 6 position chip which in turn makes the "SECURITY" light blink constantly for the first couple minutes upon start up, then eventually stops, does this have any effect on the actual security system itself? How am I to know that the PATS I believe its called is still functioning? Reason being I am driving my Ex to the airport tomorrow morning for a vacation, and will be leaving it for a week or so, then it got my mind spinning about the potential to come home to an empty spot where the Ex was.... not a good thought!

I do know that without the key, the Ex wont start because the chip in the key, is this correct?

Thanks
Devon

Take your key to the hardware store and have them make a copy... If they say your key is chipped, tell them you want the cheap $2.99 key just to have a spare to open the doors.

Try and start the engine with it.

If the PATS system doesn't read the right key, the "Theft" light will blink at you fast and the engine will just crank.

If the engine starts, PATS has been disabled.

That makes sense, I will try to give it a go. How does the PATS get disabled,is that a function of adding the chip or something separate?

I have thought about possibly removing a fuse to make sure it cant start while sitting at the airport, I guess that is an option, just have to remove the right fuse?

NO PATS

Well I had a key burned same as my "chipped" key, which it is in fact does have a chip, and much to my chagrin, it started up the Ex w/o any hesitation....damn!

I tried turning the 6 position all the way to the left to "off" but it still started the rig, makes me feel a little less "safe" about leaving my rig at the airport for a week, now what.... pull a starter fuse to make me feel a little less uneasy?

Isn't there a fuse for the IDM? You could pull that if so.

IDM is the Injector Drive Module. It's what runs the injectors on the Diesel engines.

Copy that, I am looking to see if there is a fuse that individually controls the fuel pump as I saw suggested somewhere..? Might do well, but also as I have seen before, if some body REALLY wants it, they will get it .... just peace of mind for me I guess. A little bummed that the PATS is not functioning however.

When you say you had them "burn" it, do you mean they programmed it? If so, then of course it will start the truck.

Pele was telling you to get a key cut (and only cut, not programmed) that will turn the ignition. Then check to see if the unprogrammed cut key will start the truck.

Make sure you leave your regular keys in the house when you try this method to see if your PATS has been disabled.

Yeah sorry, probably not the best verbiage, by "burn" a key I meant yes they "cut" a key, just a simple metal key unprogramed door key without a chip, and yes I left the original PATS key in my desk, snd the EXCURSION still started. ..

Ah, ok, gotcha!

Check out this thread: Truck stolen, got it back, how to prevent theft? UPDATE

PS - I'm assuming you have a 7.3L PSD since you refer to a 6 position chip. In order for us not to assume, you should fill out your signature!

I thought I did update my signature at one point, maybe I updated something else. Yup, 7.3, I ASSume people knew what my ex is. ... newby stuff. Either way, I well look into the relay, for the time being, anybody knew of a fuse I can pull to temporarily disable starting, I looked through the fuse box schematics and nothing really fit the bill. ..?

Huh? Did you click the link I provided? Your answer is right there, with several different options given. I mean, I didn't type my post in invisible font, did I?
