Hi, we only have 1 key for our '02 Excursion. The local Ford stealer wants about $100 to make a duplicate. I got a $2.00 key made at the hardware store, it fit and will turn the locks, but won't start the car due to not having a chip in it.
Is there a way to disable or defeat this system so I can use a cheap key?
I'm not the least bit concerned about theft where I live, plus I have insurance anyway.
The easiest way to disable the system is to buy a truck that doesn't have it. Other than that Ford made it VERY difficult to defeat, otherwise why bother installing it in the first place?
Hint: Many locksmiths can make a new key and program it to work in your truck for about half what the dealer charges.
How true - I had my local locksmith make two keys for my 03 and he charged $105.00 including tax and reset my PATS code so the other key that I lost wouldn't start the vehicle. Didn't even bother with the Stealer.
so i have remote start and it starts with no key but if i use a plain key it does not start but i know there is a key someware in the colum so remote start works expline that
You probably have a remote start system that is electronically connected to the PATS to allow remote starting. The good remote units do this. The cheap ones glue a PATS module to the column.
The easiest way to defeat the system in my opinion is to put the coded key hidden somewhere near the steering column. The keyed part can be removed for security. Then the aftermarket keys should work.

That is true, the PATS is indeed hard to beat; it gets even harder if you get the Ford security system.
That aside, it is true that most locksmiths can perform the service that Tedfrd spoke of. A buddy of mine, lost the key to his Focus, called his brother in law, and was on way within minutes of him arriving on the scene. While it may seem scary that they can do such a thing, it's good to know they're there when you need them. The point of this all: never go to the stealership unless it's absolutely necessary; there's always a better way.
