I have a early 99 F350, and I dont think I have a chip in the key, but everyone on the phone when I call fo an alarm says I do. Do I? I have an 2000 Expedition also, and the key is alot bigger, and I have a theft light in the expy that flashes. Tha 99 350 does not have either....Just a plastic coated key. So what do you guys think?
I'm almost positive you don't have a chip in that key. You could go make a copy and then see if it works to be sure, but I have an 04 and I don't have a chip...
If your key is small, chances are you don't have a chip. To check for sure, just go get a new key made at a hardware store. If you have a chip the new simple key will just spin the engine but it won't start. I know because I had and extra key made for my 99 F150 once, knowing that it wouldn't start the engine, but it would open the door in case I ever locked the keys in the truck. Just for kicks I tried it in the ignition and the engine would turn over but not start. Pop in the chiped key and away it would go.

Looks like Im going to have to do get another key, I just called another shop, and he informed me I do have a chipped key........
No PATS on the Super Duty trucks. I'd be a little leary of an alarm "tech" who doesn't know this. Sounds like they are trying to sell you something (PATS bypass kit) that you don't need.
this is from an old reply to a thread on pats key's
as far as a "chip key", if you look at the top of the key it has an offset hole. Meaning where the key ring goes thru it, its to one side. another give away is the little rectangular cutout at the base of the key shaft. thats where the "transponder" hides. I hope this bit of info will help others.
the sd don't have them the expys do another way to find out is most modern key cutting machines have a chip detector built in it scans the key for the chip.

For less than $2.00 you can solve the mystery by getting a new key made at Home Depot or any local hardware store. That said, I already know the answer. You do not have a chipped key. If I were you, I would avoid dealing with the cement head on the phone that said you're key is chipped. He is attmpting to rip you off and you would not be the first person to fall for this chipped key crap!
My '05 SD Harley has a chip. My old '99 F150 had a chip too. Easy way to tell is you'll have a key that has a larger plastic body. Along the top edge of the key body you'll see a little plastic plug. I've never pulled mine apart but my '05 and '99 had this plug and I would guess the chip is tucked away in there.
I think the question is about the Expy's key. The answer is yes your Expy has a chipped key. I had the same model before my current F250. The shop should still be able to put in the alarm. There is a bypass module on most alarms that will let you use the remote start feature. It will just take them a little longer to install.
