I have a 2000 expy and I only have 1 key the dealer said $99 for a key the locksmith said $85 is there a way around this or am I stuck getting a chip key from them? Thanx
You gotta get the special key as far as I know. I tried having my local auto parts guys make me a regular key and my 97 wouldn't start due to the theft device installed. It would just start and then die immediately. Now for me to get another key made up cost me 25 bucks but that's with the two original keys to program the new one. It very well might be that expensive but I'd keep calling around.
You can bypass the system and start using regular key blanks, if you'd rather.
If you install a bypass module like the one at the link below, you place your existing key inside of it. The module will transmit the key code even when you attempt to start the vehicle with a key cut from a regular plain old key blank.

That's cool. I did not know such a thing existed. Thanks for informing me. I will consider that one for $20.
you can only program a new key yourself if you have two keys to start with. Using a bypass module you make the vehicle an easier to steal. Get a new key from the locksmith. Then buy a couple of keys from an e-bay seller. Then get them cut at a hardware store or wally world. Now you can program them yourself.
I got two new Keys done at the dealer for my 2000 which also only cam with one key. It cost me $150 or so with tax BUT imagine if you loose your one key and they need to tow your truck then work out what key will work your truck plus then make your keys!
It is insanely expensive for two keys, but loose the only key you have and you will quickly discover what insane costs are! At least now my wife and I each have a key plus a spare for when it goes into the shop.
Yup, I agree. You need to have at least two keys to be able to program the others yourself. Pay the dealer to do the second key, buy the blanks from eBay, get a hardware to cut them. Program them yourself. If you lose the keys, you're back to having to have the dealer do all the work. Make sure to put two keys in a really good, safe place. Besides, the dealer will check for any recall work
If security is a concern and you have a keyless entry or remote start installed, you can control power to the bypass module with the factory alarm output wire off the unit. This way when you lock the doors with the remote it will disable the bypass module.
